CASTING FOR THE ROLE OF [SCOTTIE KING]
Scottie King is ten years old, named after her grandpa and
just as stubborn and feisty as her namesake, a man who isn't
afraid to throw a punch at someone fifty years his junior.
Though she's far from pretty, her hair a rat's nest of tangles
and her clothes stained with whatever she's been snacking on
(usually something sweet), she carries herself with confidence
and the attitude of someone much older and tougher than she is.
Scottie's dad Matt has been distant for most of her life, a
workaholic who never felt comfortable around children, even his
own. Her mother Joanie, a gorgeous clothing model, speedboat
racer, and all-around good time gal, wasn't the best role model
either, and now she's in the hospital in a coma. As a result,
Scottie has no real adult supervision in her life, and she
doesn't always respect her father's authority. In fact, she
rarely does, shocking Matt with her crude language, offensive
t-shirts (borrowed from mom's closet), and outlandish behavior.
But she's not really a bad girl - she's just had a hard time
getting noticed next to her mom and her older sister Alexandra,
a rebellious sixteen-year-old with her mom's beauty, her dad's
sarcastic sense of humor, and a habit of getting into trouble.
For Scottie, standing out has always meant being the loudest and
the first to do something crazy, like dressing up in her
sister's lingerie or leaning out the car window to yell insults
at strangers. She's the comedian of the King family, a trait
that gets her into trouble more often than not.
Beneath the wild child front, Scottie is a sweet and lonely
girl who longs for the love and attention of her parents. Like
her father, she is not emotionally prepared to deal with
Joanie's death, and she doesn't fully comprehend what's
happening to her family during this tragic time. Even though
Joanie is unconscious, Scottie is still desperate for her
approval, and refuses to talk to her mother until she has a
story "good enough" to please her. She keeps a scrapbook of her
family history and takes pictures of their journey around the
islands. She's the family historian and the keeper of their
memories, and while she can be a bit crazy, even obnoxious, at
times, her heart is in the right place.
