IMPORTANT: The setting is NEW YORK CITY - we are seeking
performers of all
ages, ethnicities and backgrounds: Asian, Black, Latino, Jewish, Muslim,
Middle Eastern, etc..
Synopsis:
Set in NEW YORK. Thirteen year old AMANDA GORDON's life wasn't
perfect, but it was close. She had her best friens, SUSAN, a
never ending source of entertainment. She
had the close circle of adopted aunts and uncles known as 'the
group', who had been mothering her ever since she lost her
real mother at six. And above all, she had her father, an
affable poetry professor whom she couldn't have been closer
to. But then one day she discovered that DAVID GORDON wasn't
her father at all. Instead, it was a man who couldn't have
been more different from him. At first, she was intrigued.
JOHN SULLIVAN (played by JAMES DENTON) wasn't simply well-off;
he was a millionaire real estate developer. While she and
David lived in a ramshackle house with off and on heat, John
had places in Los Angeles and at New York's Trump Tower. He
bought art and went to parties with celebrities. Before long,
he had whisked her off for a weekend in Miami, and she was
ushered into a world in which she traveled by limousine and
could afford the clothes she always wanted. Even though it
was putting David through hell (he even secretly followed her
to Florida), Amanda was confused. She was angry with David
for never telling her that John
was her real Dad. She was excited by the potential of his new
life, which seemed to provide all the glamour she'd been
missing. To make matters more complicated, however, she soon
realizes that John is not the ideal parent, even by a 13-year
old girl's standards. Business is his first priority. He
likes to stay out late. He had no interest in telling his
daughter that she should study or not watch too much TV. And
when she points out that this is his job...he tells her that
she's being boring. Unfortunately, now that he has brought
his daughter back into his life, he has no intention of giving
her up. He may have left her mother fourteen years ago, but
because David never filed the proper papers, John is still her
legal guardian. And now that his natural competitiveness has
been awoken, he intends to retain that authority. With Amanda
struggling to make sense of her confilicting feelings, it is
now up to David to figure out a way to keep her from slipping
out of his life. Luckily, he has some valuable allies on his
side, including the colorful members of 'the group'; a gay
Southern lawyer who knows a thing or two about adversity; and
a new girlfriend named MEGAN, who, as a former Jeopardy
champion, has an incredibly diverse range of information at
her fingertips. Ultimately, however, it is David himself who
is going to have to find a way to face down the man who seems
his superior in so many ways. Because if he doesn't, he's
going to lose the one thing that makes his life truly worth
living.
