Story synopsis: Format: Television Series
Network: Comedy Network (to be pitched)
Michael Yap just wants to be an artist. However, his
traditionally Chinese family insists he become a doctor to keep
the family name. Stuck between a rock and a hard place (Western
values vs. tradition), Michael concocts elaborate schemes to get
out of the duties expected of him to the amusement of his
laid-back father and irritates his hardline traditional mother
to no end.
The scene to be shot on August 9th is the main character,
Michael, trying to get out of partaking in a Chinese New Year
celebration his parents forced him to. He sneaks into the crowd
and tries to hide behind a lion dancer, another young man roped
into it by his parents and passes the buck to Michael. Michael
however is not as coordinated as his professional counterpart
and ends up looking like an idiot while trying to escape (so he
doesn't look like an idiot). Other scenes of a shorter length
may be shot to append to the trailer.
It will be used for the teaser trailer, to be aired and profiled
on CTV Ottawa and will also be included in the Artist M.D.
production package for CTV/Comedy Network.
Roles wanted to fill: MR. DAN - Middle aged Asian male, (35-60),
easy going, bemused. Larger in girth preferred but not required.
Ability to speak Cantonese required.
MRS. DAN (MOTHER) - Middle aged Asian male (35-60), petite,
irritable. Confrontational - the stereotypical 'angry
housewife'. Ability to speak Cantonese required.
MICHAEL DAN - Slender build, Asian, 19-25. Sarcastic,
quick-witted, bright. Likeable but smarmy 'wise guy'. Ability to
speak Cantonese not required, but would be in asset if the
series goes into production.
LION DANCERS - This is open but these services may be contracted
out.
Other comments: NOTE: CJOH-TV crews will be on location with
Skycron crews during the production of the trailer, as they are
doing a profile on the Artist M.D. series and Skycron.
While actors will be working pro-bono for the trailer, food and
transportation expenses will be paid for by Skycron. As Artist
M.D. is a series in development, actors should prepare for the
possibility (paid obviously) to return should the series be
optioned by Comedy. Actors should also be prepared to join ACTRA
if ARTIST M.D. is acquired as it will be a unionized production
at that time.
As the Skycron offices are headed in Toronto, for auditions we
are accepting YouTube auditions, videotapes and DVDs. We will be
judging based on screen presence and how natural you sound.
Guidelines for audition tapes:
Physical tapes should be sent to:
Skycron Studios: Casting
Attn: Stephani Yap
1011 Upper Middle Road East., Suite 1216, Oakville, Ontario, L6H
5Z9.
YOUTUBE demo reels should be emailed to
cory@skycron.com.
Audition reels must follow some simple guidelines:
-Camera should be a head and shoulders shot, with performer
centered in frame with a stabilization device (tripod). NO
handheld shots. No cutting or editing allowed. We need to know
how long you can hold a 'take'.
-Do NOT add any kind of music. This masks your performance and
limits our ability to accurately judge your ability. Any
audition tapes with any music or electronic voice alteration
will be automatically rejected.
We will be in Ottawa one week before filming to meet with the
actors chosen for a rehearsal and then an entire shooting day
will commence August 9th at 11 AM. As CTV Ottawa crews will be
present be reminded the spot will appear on television.
In addition to the above compensation, actors will also receive
an Artist M.D. booklet following the shoot and a copy of the
trailer.
If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact
either Stephani Yap or Cory Carlick at the Skycron offices at
416-554-9059. Limit calls between 8 AM and 6 PM.
